Bosch Rexroth and AMD are working together on Software-Defined Automation
ctrlX OS, the open operating system for partner integration developed by Bosch Rexroth, now supports integration with AMD Embedded x86 processors and adaptive SoCs. On this basis, AMD further improves hardware design in combination with a modular software architecture. In the era of Software-Defined Automation, industrialists need optimized silicon architectures offering scalable performance, long lifecycle support, and industrial-grade security features.
ctrlX OS sets the standard for industrial operating systems with its open, modular architecture, robust in-built security features, and a collaborative innovation model. The provision of ctrlX OS on AMD-technology powered devices will provide manufacturers, machine builders, system designers, integrators and end-users greater with more flexibility for their compute infrastructure in the future, as well as access to the ctrlX OS Ecosystem. This includes the ready-to-use industrial applications, device management and support community.
By integrating AMD Embedded CPUs and adaptive SoCs, including the AMD Ryzen™ Embedded processors, EPYC™ Embedded CPUs, and Zynq™ UltraScale+™ adaptive SoC families, ctrlX OS can now run on a wider range of industrial devices such as IPCs, Mini PCs, HMI Panels, COM Express and edge systems driven by AMD. This allows customers to benefit from the performance leadership, power efficiency, and security features of AMD devices for industrial edge computing and embedded control.
The robust security capabilities of AMD devices are further enhanced by ctrlX OS, which is designed to address the rigorous requirements of modern industrial environments. It is certified to IEC 62443-4-2 Security Level 2, supports seamless device management, enables secure over-the-air (OTA) updates, and is ready for upcoming regulatory requirements such as the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). ctrlX OS is an open, Linux-based operating system for industrial automation, which offers a modular, real-time capable, and microservices-driven platform. Decoupled from proprietary hardware, customers can deploy ctrlX OS across a broad set of embedded processor systems. With this integration, customers can now seamlessly bring up the system and deploy applications across AMD-powered products.
“With ctrlX OS now deployable with AMD Embedded CPUs and adaptive SoCs, customers can build applications on a single, harmonized OS and SoC architecture and scale effortlessly. For example, from compact edge gateways to high-end Edge AI platforms,” said Praveen Tamang, Global Head of Automation Software, Bosch Rexroth AG. “Leveraging a harmonized OS and SoC foundation brings clear advantages: lower integration effort, faster time-to-market with proven real-time industrial-grade reliability, and readiness for the fast-approaching Cyber Resilience Act from day one.”
Beyond core processing, the integration of advanced NPUs (Neural Processing Units) and GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) with AMD Ryzen Embedded processors unlocks new dimensions for industrial innovation. Through the comprehensive ctrlX OS SDK, end-customers can now develop highly sophisticated applications ranging from a simple control logic all the way to advanced AI agents harnessing the full power of the AMD Embedded processors. Furthermore, the ctrlX World partners can leverage these capabilities to create and offer cutting-edge apps, ready to be downloaded and deployed from the ctrlX OS Store, drastically reducing time-to-market for advanced solutions.
"Industrial customers embracing Software-Defined Automation need open, flexible platforms that scale across diverse environments, while delivering industrial-grade compute performance, power efficiency, and security features," said Amey Deosthali, Senior Director, Embedded Product Marketing, AMD. " AMD customers can now access ctrlX OS seamlessly and benefit from the industrially proven platform and continuously growing ecosystem.”
